量的研究と質的研究の大きな違いは，多くの量的研究が研究者によって設定された仮説の検証を目標とするのに対し，多くの質的研究は仮説を生成するところを目指している点である．その意味で，しばしば，仮説検証型研究の前段階として，研究変数の把握のために行われる（Pope & Mays, 2006）．
